Broadview Basement & Staircase Remodel

This young family purchased this mid-century modern home in the Seattle neighborhood of Broadview back in 2016. As their family grew, they realized they needed additional bedrooms and living space. The project transformed a dark and dreary basement into a bright primary suite, child’s bedroom, living room with ample storage, and a laundry space. Pops of color were added and playful light fixtures that complement the sleek and simple backdrop of the polished concrete floors and crisp white walls. Bringing in natural light and a sense of openness was extremely important to the family! Harjo partnered with Suzanne Kraus & Cassidy Zimmerman of SHKS Architects to introduce an organic and spacious new design.  Smooth, reflective finishes were incorporated and enlarged window openings to bring outdoors in. A new standing seam metal roof and clear cedar soffit compliment the style of this 1950’s home.

Creating a primary suite in the unfinished basement was a cost-effective alternative to modifying functional living space on the main level. By removing an existing fireplace that sat in between the living space and kitchen on the main floor, the space was opened and allowed for a new dining area. A wall was removed and replaced with a brand-new staircase that leads down to the basement. By finishing the basement, the functional living space expanded to 850 more square feet. What was once an unfinished basement is now a spacious primary suite with a nursery nearby. The primary suite’s new bathroom is a favorite addition for the family. The bright accent tiles give the sense of brightness and openness that they wanted created in the basement. The family was extremely happy with the finished product!
