Magnolia Tudor Addition and Remodel
This 1930s home was full of charm, but the floorplan lacked functionality. Minimally expanding the footprint at the back and side of the house made a great impact, and created new opportunities to highlight the home’s history. Repurposing original elements, as well as new details that mimic the old ones, seamlessly blend the refreshed design with the Tudor style architecture. With the additional square footage and reconfiguration of the basement, the primary suite received a revamp, and new spaces, such as the family room and game room, were created. Upstairs, the expanded kitchen and new bar area are the perfect place to entertain, all with views of the Puget Sound.
Tying in History
Throughout the design and construction process, there was particular attention to integrating the history of the home into the new renovation. A seamless transition from the existing hardwoods to the new, playing with the countertop edge profiles, and mixing wood and painted trim allowed the new design to feel refreshed while still fitting with the original architectural details. A few original pieces from the home were repurposed in new areas, including gargoyles under the shelving by the fireplace and an original door that now divides the game room from the family room.
Primary Bathroom
Relocating this bathroom, and taking up wasted space in the primary bedroom, allowed for ample natural light and a spacious retreat. The black and white color scheme of this bathroom pays homage to the history of the home, while the white oak cabinetry and gold tones bring in a contemporary and warm feel. A custom vanity with open shelving, a hamper pull out, and much-needed additional counterspace created the perfect space to get ready in the morning. A curbless shower seamlessly flows into the rest of the bathroom and opens the space for a roomier feel.
Basement Reimagined
What was mostly underutilized space was transformed into usable square footage, with heated slate tile floors throughout that tie the different spaces together. The game room features a custom plaster fireplace with built-in art niches, and a bench for extra seating and storage. Repurposed original doors open into the family room, with navy blue paint creating the perfect spot for watching a movie. A new airy feeling full bathroom provides the perfect spot to wash the client’s dogs. Tucked away down the hall is a playful laundry area. The pale yellow sink and checkered countertop bring character to a utilitarian space.
Addition
Additional square footage was added selectively, only in the best places to make the home feel open and connected while preserving the original character of the exterior. Tying in brick from one of the Seattle fires into the existing brick added another layer of history to the home. At the side of the home, a new mudroom showcases the original brick exterior, providing a beautiful backdrop for the family’s coats. A new staircase that connects the expanded kitchen to the improved basement features a new railing that mimics the original handrail in the home. Adjacent to the kitchen, an office space capitalizes on views of the Puget Sound with a custom arched window built to match the original windows on the other side of the home.
Kitchen and Bar
What was once a cramped kitchen with little storage or counterspace, transformed into an expansive kitchen with ample storage. Dark blue cabinetry seamlessly transitions into the matching textured backsplash that is highlighted by the wall sconces flanking the window. Mixing stainless steel countertops and appliances with gold hardware and warm wood tones achieves the perfect balance of cool and warm tones in this space. Open shelving allows the homeowner to display her favorite cookbooks and dishes. In the dining room, the custom bar defines an otherwise underutilized area, and features base molding and a countertop edge detail that add character to this space.
