This Phinney Ridge home gained a welcoming new front entry by transforming an open porch into a bright, enclosed space that can be enjoyed year-round. The homeowners wanted a comfortable place to relax, work from home, and create a much-needed landing zone for coats and shoes—all while preserving the Craftsman character, abundant natural light, and welcoming feel of their home.

A Bright and Inviting Porch

Because the living room’s natural light was one of the homeowners’ favorite features of the house, maintaining that brightness became a driving force behind the design. Full-light windows preserve views to the yard and allow sunlight to continue flowing into the home, while operable casement windows provide natural ventilation without sacrificing the traditional appearance.

Inside, warm white finishes keep the space feeling open and inviting. The existing siding and porch ceiling were carefully preserved and repainted, adding texture and character while helping the new enclosure blend seamlessly with the original home. A classic checkerboard Marmoleum floor introduces timeless personality with a fresh, modern color palette. Installed on the diagonal, the pattern visually expands the compact footprint while adding movement and interest to the space.

The enclosed porch now serves as a flexible extension of the home. A lowered entry landing creates a practical drop zone for shoes, coats, and everyday items before stepping into the main living spaces, making daily routines more convenient while providing a welcoming transition from outside to inside.

Thoughtfully Reimagined Entry and Stairs

Relocating the front stairs created a more natural approach from the sidewalk, opened up valuable yard space, and provided a welcoming landing at the new front entrance.

Rather than dramatically altering the existing porch structure, the framing was carefully modified to create a lowered interior entry platform that aligns with the exterior landing. This thoughtful solution minimized structural changes while creating a comfortable, accessible entry sequence that feels intentional and well integrated.

Throughout the exterior, preserving the home’s Craftsman character remained a priority. Existing columns and decorative corbels were retained, new trim details were designed to match the original home, and the stair railings were detailed to complement the existing porch columns. The result is an addition that feels refreshed yet timeless—so seamlessly integrated that it appears to have always been part of the house.
